I chose this idea because Curry House had a close connection with the Japanese community. Also, the Curry House I went to has been there since I was a little kid, so it was a part of my childhood. Curry House was a rare establishment that produced and sold Japanese curry and spaghetti to its customers. Not many restaurants made traditional Japanese curry in a fast-food chain format. The news broke out on social media about its mysterious and sudden closure and it spread throughout the Asian community. All Curry House establishments were closed on Monday, February 24, 2020. Workers were contacted that Monday morning and were informed that they no longer had a job. The Los Angeles Times called it the “Curry House Massacre”. Even outside the Asian communities the news is spreading.
I hoped to inform people about a beloved establishment for my community and its sudden closing. It is also important to note about the treatment to all the employees associated with Curry House. The sudden closure left everyone without a job. Some people relied on their Curry House job to pay their bills and are now left with nothing but their last paycheck from them. The sudden closure with no clear explanation is leaving people in confusion and shock.
I think I was successful. I had access to gather more information about the topic. I wanted to talk about this topic because this situation was never a thought in a lot of peoples’ minds. Curry House closing is not a huge issue politically or economically but it had a special attachment to Asian communities especially to the Japanese community.
The only thing I would do differently is that I would visit more Curry House locations to capture the reality that all Curry Houses are permanently closed. I would take pictures of each establishment to see the differences and similarities. I only visited my local Curry House near my house.
Another idea I would explore through “shocking art” would be on pollution. I would visit my local beach and I guarantee I would see trash everywhere. I would take pictures of all the litter to show the big problem we have in this world. As a result, I would pick up as much trash as I could to clean up the beach. I would take pictures of the aftermath to demonstrate the impact we have as people and show a cleaner beach.
