- I had no strong feelings when performing Maintenance Art. The act did not give any alternative feelings except for that I cleaned a dirty art figure. I was told to clean the sculpture so it felt more like an order than a piece of work.
- Mierle Laderman Ukeles cleaning the steps was art that felt comforting, soft, and gentle. Richard Serra flinging molten lead against the walls was art that felt angry, attacking, and destructive. However, they are similar in the respect that they both have meaning and they both trying to send a message to people through their actions. I consider them both art because their individual actions are art forms.
- Whether it was in front of an Art Museum or in the front yard, I consider it to be a form of art. The location isn’t the factor; it is the action that makes it art. However, if she hired as a janitor and still working during this time then it is not art. She is essentially being told to clean the steps for money. It is similar to me cleaning the Piotr Kowalski sculpture where I was told to clean it.
- Any object or action can be art as long as there is an intention or message a person wants to convey. If the artist or performer wants their product to mean something more than whatever the object or action is then it will become to art. I believe if the one creating said art and wants it to be art then it will be art. If a painting is made by someone and he doesn’t consider that art then the creator is one that is correct and vice versa. A house can be art whether it is colorful or just plain white. Being exhibited in a museum doesn’t make something art; location is not the factor.
- I don’t think Mierle Laderman Ukeles or Jennifer Lopez made me think differently of “Women’s Work”. “Women’s Work” implies work that women usually do like clean the house, do the laundry, and even cook dinner. But I also do those stuff; I never thought of any job or action as one gender. I don’t consider “Women’s Work” to be art because their jobs are my jobs and I don’t consider my actions to be art.
- If Kobe Bryant had a star displayed down Hollywood Blvd, I would get down on my knees and clean it. Be that as it may, right now I would clean the star of Jackie Chan.
